Best Classic Burger Sauce

This classic burger sauce is the one condiment that turns an ordinary burger into a drive-thru-worthy one — smooth, tangy, and just sweet enough, somewhere between a flavored mayo and a secret sauce. It takes five minutes with ingredients you probably already have, and it’s just as good as a dip for fries and onion rings, a spread for sandwiches, or a sauce for fried seafood. Once you make a batch, it’ll become the thing you put on everything.

    Storage

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1–2 weeks. Because it’s mayonnaise-based, this sauce doesn’t freeze well — the texture will separate once thawed.

    Recipe FAQs

What’s the difference between this and thousand island dressing? They’re closely related — this sauce skips the chopped olives or egg some thousand island recipes include and leans a bit more tangy and smoky from the paprika and garlic powder, making it feel more like a burger-specific sauce than a salad dressing.

Can I make it spicy? Yes — a dash of hot sauce, a pinch of cayenne, or a spoonful of finely diced jalapeño all work well without overpowering the base flavor.

What else can I use this on? Beyond burgers, it’s great on sandwiches, as a dip for fries or onion rings, drizzled over grilled chicken, or served alongside fried seafood.

Can I make this ahead for a cookout? Yes — it actually tastes better after an hour or two in the fridge, once the flavors have had time to meld. Make it up to a week ahead and keep it chilled until serving.
