Air Fryer Whole Chicken Wings

These air fryer whole chicken wings get you restaurant-quality crispy skin without the deep fryer, the oil mess, or the wait — just two simple steps and 30 minutes start to finish. A handful of pantry seasonings is all it takes to season the wings before the air fryer does the rest, turning out wings with shatter-crisp skin and juicy meat underneath. Serve them with your favorite dip and expect fingers (and faces) to get a little messy.

Serving Suggestions

Keep a simple dip on standby, like ranch, or go bolder with a batch of Homemade Buffalo Sauce tossed on right after they come out of the basket.

Place the chicken in the air fryer basket.

Air Fry at 400°F (204°C) for 25 minutes (flip after 12 minutes)

Or until the skin is crispy and golden brown .

    Storage & Reheating

Store leftover wings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days. To reheat and bring back the crispy skin, air fry at 375°F for 3–5 minutes until heated through — microwaving will make the skin soft rather than crisp. For longer storage, freeze cooked wings in a freezer-safe bag for up to 2–3 months; thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.

    Recipe FAQs

What’s the difference between whole wings and wingettes/drumettes? A whole wing includes the flat, drumette, and tip all in one piece, while most grocery stores also sell them pre-cut into flats and drumettes separately. Whole wings work great in this recipe as written; if you’re using pre-cut pieces instead, start checking for doneness a few minutes early since they’re smaller.

Can I use frozen chicken wings? Thaw them first for the best results — frozen wings release extra moisture as they cook, which can keep the skin from getting fully crispy. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then pat very dry before seasoning.

Do I really need to flip the wings halfway through? Yes — flipping halfway ensures both sides get direct air flow and crisp up evenly, rather than one side steaming against the basket.

Can I bake these instead of using an air fryer? Yes — bake at 425°F on a wire rack set over a baking sheet for about 40–45 minutes, flipping halfway, until the skin is crispy and golden. The rack helps air circulate underneath, which gets you closer to the air fryer’s crisping effect.

Why pat the wings dry before seasoning? Removing surface moisture helps the seasoning and oil adhere better and gives you crispier skin — any extra moisture on the surface creates steam in the air fryer instead of crisp, browned skin.
